‘The Young Pope’ filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino will direct the adaptation for Makeready.
Jennifer Lawrence and The Young Pope director Paolo Sorrentino are teaming on Mob Girl, a feature adaptation of a true-crime story for Makeready, the content studio founded by Brad Westson.
Lawrence will star in and also produce the adaptation of the book by Teresa Carpenter along with Justine Polsky via the duo’s banner, Excellent Cadaver, Makeready said Wednesday. Sorrentino and Lorenzo Mieli will also produce.
Angelina Burnett, a writer-producer who has worked on such shows as The Americans and Halt and Catch Fire, has been hired to pen the script.
Mob Girl centers on Arlyne Brickman, a woman who grew up among racketeers and mobsters on the Lower East Side of New York City. From dating the wise guys to then running errands for them, she became a “mob girlfriend” who then wanted a piece of the action herself. She eventually became a police informant and major witness in the government’s case against the Colombo crime family.
“Seeing this story from a woman’s point of view is a fresh and exciting approach to telling a classic mob story,” said Weston in a statement.
Makeready partner and head of film Pam Abdy and Natalie Williams will oversee for the studio.
Mob Girl marks the first project under the recently announced first-look film deal between Lawrence’s Excellent Cadaver and Makeready. Lawrence is currently shooting A24’s untitled soldier drama, which is being helmed by stage director turned first-time filmmaker Lila Neugebauer. Lawrence and Polsky are producing the feature along with Scott Rudin and Eli Bush.
Sorrentino and Miele produced The Young Pope, which starred Jude Law, for HBO. The duo are currently in production on the follow-up, The New Pope, with John Malkovich joining the Law-led cast. Both series were created and directed by Sorrentino.
Lawrence is repped by LBI Entertainment and Hansen Jacobson. Sorrentino is repped by UTA. Burnett is repped by Manage-ment and Gang Tyre. ICM Partners repped the author in the book deal.

Jennifer Lawrence is engaged to boyfriend Cooke Maroney, a rep for the actress confirms to PEOPLE.
The Oscar winner, 28, was spotted wearing a “massive ring” while enjoying what appeared to be a celebratory dinner with Maroney, 34, at Raoul’s, an upscale French restaurant in New York City, according to Page Six.
“It was a giant rock. They seemed like they were celebrating and people were talking about it,” a source told the outlet. “The ring was very noticeable. They were sitting back in a corner. She was wearing a cute black dress with white polka dots.”
The couple got cozy during a date on Saturday in New York City. A few days earlier, the happy couple was spotted on another date in the West Village, all bundled up to battle freezing temperatures.
A source confirmed to PEOPLE in June the actress was dating Maroney. Since then, the two haven’t shied away from going on dates in public together. In late June, the couple was photographed enjoying a romantic candlelit dinner in New York City.
They followed up their date with a trip to Paris and later Rome in August. A source told PEOPLE the couple “seemed happy, occasionally holding hands” while in the French capital.
The insider noted the couple stayed at The Ritz hotel while on their “very short trip” and that they mostly “went walking together.”
In September, Lawrence took Maroney with her to the New York Film Festival premiere of The Favourite — which stars her ex Nicholas Hoult and one of her best friends, Emma Stone. Also in attendance was Lawrence’s ex Darren Aronofsky.

Meanwhile, down the street, at the Hyatt outside Grand Central, one of our actual most treasured comedians was speaking at a different summit, the Concordia Summit, following people like U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta and the First Lady of Namibia Monica Geingos. It was Jennifer Lawrence, actress on leave, and she had a lot to say about her absence.
Lawrence is taking a year off acting, as she announced in March. In that time she’s been working with Represent.Us, a bipartisan effort to pass anti-corruption legislation at a state level that also calls Adam McKay and David O. Russell board members. (It’s a soft sabbatical. Projects are still in development. It’s mostly a break from sets.) And that’s what brought her here, to this expansive hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where discussions of fair-labor supply chains and PowerPoints titled “Us vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism” ruled the day.
“It could have been age, it could have been the election,” she told CBS’s Gayle King, the interviewer on hand, who asked what inspired her to take her leave. “Two years ago was when the passion for politics really started growing, and the more I was educated and educated myself, I realized the most important thing that a political movement can have is support from the right and left.” Their chat followed a TED Talk–like PowerPoint of her own, along with Josh Lynn, the managing director and co-founder of Represent.Us, that laid out a plan for how to combat widespread corruption in Washington via lobbies and dark money.
“The beautiful thing about having Jen involved is this is an issue that tends to be a little boring,” Lynn told King. “People don’t wake up in the morning over breakfast and discuss like, ‘What’s happening with American democracy today?’ They’re much more concerned about being able to afford groceries or whatever the environmental crisis might be.” Lynn said he knew it would take “big megaphones” to allow Represent.Us to thrive, which is where the Oscar-winning likes of O’Russell, McKay, and Lawrence came in.
“Corruption doesn’t wear a political label and the American people know that,” Lawrence said at the summit. “Everybody expects more from their parties no matter the politician or the specific party.” Wearing a D.C.-chic uniform—blazer, white button-down—and using the deft slide skills of a professional corporate speaker, she seemed perfectly at home in her new political milieu. But there were also moments where the human slipped through. “I think my whole mind went blank, I knew this was going to happen,” she said, losing the thread of her talking point. “No, it’s O.K. I have horrible stage fright.”
After King pointed out that she’s Jennifer Lawrence, she pointed out, “I don’t work onstage! I don’t know why everyone says that! It’s so different!”
Many screen actors spend their sabbaticals on a stage. Lawrence has too; it’s just a political one.
The actress is continuing on without agency representation.

Sources tell THR that the departure is amicable. Lawrence is remaining agent-less and will continue to be represented by manager Rick Yorn at LBI Entertainment, with whom she signed in April.
CAA had been with the 28-year-old actress for just over a decade, negotiating her first Oscar-nominated role in 2010’s Winter’s Bone. Lawrence catapulted to the A-list shortly after that with two major franchises — X-Men and The Hunger Games. She continued to earn critical acclaim with back-to-back Academy Award nominations for Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, including a lead actress win for the former, and later received a fourth Oscar nomination, for 2015’s Joy. Her recent films include Passengers, Mother! and Red Sparrow.
Next up for Lawrence is X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and she also is attached to Universal’s Bad Blood, starring as notorious Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in the true-life story from Adam McKay.
Lawrence also continues to be repped by attorneys Gretchen Rush and Steve Warren at Hansen Jacobson.
