SLASH FILM – We’re only a few weeks away from the release of Darren Aronofsky‘s mother!, and in the wake of the film’s enigmatic trailers, Paramount is slowly unspooling information about the horror thriller that stars Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem.
A new batch of viral marketing has divulged a major revelation about Lawrence’s character that the posters and trailers have kept secret until now. Take a look at the movie’s newest poster (complete with a hidden message printed on it!), check out some new TV spots, and uncover one of the film’s big secrets below. Warning: a potential spoiler lies ahead.
First up, take a look at a few TV spots that aired this past weekend during the Video Music Awards.
Here’s where the real fun begins. Aronofsky stopped by Reddit to unveil a new poster:
The Darren Aronofsky film looks even scarier than we thought it was.
VANITY FAIR – If you thought that first horrifying teaser for Mother! was insane, feast your eyes upon the new full trailer. Plot details for Darren Aronofsky’s mysterious film, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer, have finally come to light by way of the full clip, a snapshot of all the terror to come.
The trailer begins calmly enough, with Lawrence’s character redecorating the home she shares with her partner (Bardem, in a typically matched Hollywood pairing). “I want to make it paradise,” she coos. Then one day, a stranger (Harris) shows up in need of some lodging. And then his sinister wife (Pfeiffer) shows up. And everything starts to blow up in slow motion.
In typical Aronofsky fashion, Mother! seems to be all about terrifying mind tricks coupled with real-world horror (though it’s a step up in the pure-horror department from Black Swan). After the arrival of her strange guests, Lawrence quickly starts to unravel, racked with paranoia, snooping around until she finds something truly unsettling—a picture of her husband in the strange man’s bag. Pfeiffer and Harris’s characters are up to no good, planting doubt in the home owners’ relationship, and bringing with them a world of creepy mind tricks and a parade of ghoulish people with death in their eyes.
The real terror, however, is that the beautiful house gets destroyed, piece by piece. Lawrence’s character did all that redecorating for naught! Lightbulbs bleed and explode, one room catches on fire, and there’s a wall in the creepy cellar (there’s always a creepy cellar) that rattles, booms, and spurts blood. It’s like reverse HGTV.
Mother! hits theaters on Sept. 15, a prime release date for awards-season audiences to sit down and see if Aronofsky has a potential best-picture nominee on his hands. Oscar crowds don’t typically go for horror, but the filmmaker’s particular brand of fear coupled with his winning cast might be too hard to ignore—depending on the final product, of course.
The Darren Aronofsky-directed film arrives Sept. 15
EW – Jennifer Lawrence’s next movie is coming a month earlier than expected, and now we’re getting a first (and intense) look at the film via its first teaser trailer.
The new footage from mother! arrived online Monday, beginning with Lawrence wandering through a home as disembodied voices are heard speaking. But as the teaser progresses, things take a much more sinister turn.
The psychological thriller, written and directed by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), centers on a couple whose relationship is tested when a group of unexpected guests arrive at their home. Lawrence stars alongside Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Ed Harris.
mother! will screen at film festivals in Venice and Toronto before arriving in theaters Sept. 15. Before that, the film’s full trailer will arrive on Aug. 8.
EW – 20th Century Fox’s X-Men maestro Simon Kinberg will make his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix, an adaptation of one of the property’s most iconic story lines. Kinberg’s film will also bring back much of the cast of X-Men: Apocalypse, including Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Tye Sheridan. Bryan Singer, Hutch Parker and Lauren Shuler Donner will produce.
Jessica Chastain is also in talks to play the villain, reportedly an alien named Lilandra.
Dark Phoenix is an achievement years in the making for Kinberg. He wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, which attempted to tell the Jean Grey story; it wound up as a side story, angering the core fan audience. Kinberg told EW in 2015, “We ended up adding the cure plot into it so there were larger stakes and it included more of the X-Men. The Dark Phoenix story went from being the A-plot to the B-plot of the movie. What’s nice now is my hope is eventually we can tell that story again.”
It’s also a coup for Kinberg to reunite the cast, particularly Lawrence, who has been on the fence about returning to the franchise after three turns as shape-shifter Mystique.
Dark Phoenix will shoot in Montreal and is due in theaters Nov. 2, 2018.
COLLIDER – It’s not entirely obvious when the backlash to Darren Aronofsky started but it likely started around the time The Fountain was released. The release of two masterpieces in the wake of that wild metaphysical mess rehabilitated his reputation extensively but then the backlash got resurrected with his undervalued, remarkable Noah, in which Russell Crowe played the biblical character. Even bonafide bible-thumpers, the same crowds that showed up for dreck like War Room, didn’t make the trip to see Aronofsky’s film. A popular reason given was that people died and the story was sad, which clearly never happened anywhere else in the bible.
Regardless, this is all to say Aronofsky is an ambitious director whether he also happens to be a popular one or not. He’s never made a boring movie and for all the flack that The Fountain and Noah have received, there are very few movies in circulation that look like them and even fewer films that are written with such audacious aims. Addiction, obsession, and pent-up desires are paramount to his films, whether in the guise of heroin in Requiem for a Dream or fame and physique in The Wrestler. Similarly aggressive returns of the repressed can be found in Pi, his excellent debut, and Black Swan, his beloved horror-melodrama starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis.
Her latest film Passengers is a sci-fi thriller set in space.
And Jennifer Lawrence, 26, looked out of this world when she attended a photocall for the film at Hotel Adlon in Berlin on Friday.
The Hollywood star showed off her cleavage in stunning black and white polka dot co-ords as well as a peak at her toned tum. Her cropped bandeau top had a small cutout section to draw attention to her chest, while the elasticated high-waisted skirt emphasised her tiny middle. She wore her long golden tresses in waves from a middle parting and decorated her eyes with thick eyeliner and smokey shadow.
Jennifer was joined by her co-star Chris Pratt, 37, who looked dapper in an all-black ensemble.
The pair stood side by side in front of the promo board and traded friendly glances.
Jennifer Lawrence has been on a winning streak with her red carpet style lately, and seems to be pulling out one showstopping look after another on the press tour for her film Passengers. Earlier today in London, the actress took the idea of holiday party dressing in a new direction, with an artful splatter-print black and red dress.
It was a clear departure from the princess-worthy Dior look she wore earlier this week in Paris, and the 3.1 Phillip Lim white skirtsuit she sported yesterday in Madrid. Today’s Proenza Schouler dress was cool yet elegant and totally fit the bill for Lawerence’s press junket appearance. With its asymmetric hem, the frock brought Lawrence’s toned legs into the picture without revealing too much. The festive ruffles were also right in line with the Latin-inspired trend we’ve seen on the runway in the past few seasons; indeed, her peep-toe stilettos were just the kind of shoes you could imagine on the floor of a chic tango dance hall.
